Honduras Las Calaveras, 250 g – espresso

Las Calaveras was founded in 1986 when Carlos Alonso Castillo saved enough money from working on neighboring farms to buy his first plot and start growing coffee on his own. The family has two generations of coffee producers who are now focused on producing high-quality products.

Las Calaveras is located at an elevation of 1400-1550 meters above sea level in the La Paz region in the southwestern part of Honduras, near the Montesillos Nature Reserve. The indigenous people, the Lenca, call this area “the place of stone” due to its mountainous terrain covered with dense jungle. La Paz features clay loam soils and a moderate climate. Here, coffee trees receive less daylight, resulting in lower yields but with better quality.

Finca Las Calaveras spans 12 hectares, where high-quality coffee with a score of 85+ is cultivated. In addition to coffee, bananas are also grown for the family. The farm strives to work in harmony with the environment, employing both organic and some chemical fertilizers. For instance, they use coffee by-products as organic fertilizers. Additionally, the farm has implemented experimental plots using trees to improve water retention during the summer and prevent soil degradation from heavy winter rains.

Carlos Alonso uses Brazilian varieties known for their excellent yield and cup quality, as well as some Salvadoran varieties. The quality of the coffee is regularly monitored through cupping sessions conducted for each dried batch.
