Description
The Aruco Farmer Cooperative was established in 2006 at the initiative of 14 coffee producers from the municipality of Corquin, Copan. Currently, it brings together over 200 partner producers. All of them, along with their families, are involved in the cultivation and harvesting of coffee.
Aruco’s plantations cover a total area of 1,700 hectares, located at an altitude of 1,000 to 1,600 meters above sea level. Farmers grow various Arabica varieties such as Bourbon, Caturra, Catuai, IHCAFE 90, Lempira, Maragogype, Pacamara, Gesha, and Parainema.
Aruco provides all cooperative members with technical assistance, financing, and ensures the marketing of green beans at an international level. This approach guarantees high productivity and environmental sustainability in production, while also promoting the overall development of families in the region. Additionally, Aruco supports local educational and community projects, as well as health care centers.
The cooperative has its own processing station, equipped with modular sections for washed processing and drying. The fermentation process utilizes eco-friendly equipment that minimizes water consumption, and hot air for drying beans is generated by burning coffee husks in specialized ovens.
This coffee was harvested by farmers from plantations in Santa Barbara and Comayagua. Coffee from Santa Barbara is marked with a special geographical indication (GI) known as Honduran Western Coffees (HWC) and is characterized by its sweetness and mild acidity. Comayagua, located in the central part of the country, is considered the region with the highest coffee yield in Honduras. Local farms often attract tourists eager to learn about the coffee growing process.
